Smith to Run Cross Country at University of Detroit-Mercy
BLANCHARD, Mich. -- Montabella High School senior Taylor Smith will go down as one of the best and most decorated athletes in Montabella history.
Now, she is taking her talent to another level. Smith signed a letter of intent to run cross country at University of Detroit-Mercy, becoming one of only a few MHS student-athletes to ever play college at the Division I level.
During her time at Montabella, Smith earned all-state honors all four years of high school. She finished in the Top 30 individual places at the MHSAA State Finals, including two top five finishes. She also holds the school record time of 18:54. In her senior year, she took on more of a leadership role with team and led the Lady Mustangs to an eighth-place overall team finish, the best in school history.
Montabella cross country coach Jeff Kauffman was very impressed with Taylor’s leadership this year. “Taylor was one of the most competitive runners I have ever coached. Even when she didn’t feel well, she still gave it her all. Much of this season’s success was predicated on her senior leadership and hard work put in by Taylor during the off-season. With her attitude, dedication, and accolades, Taylor has become the new Montabella model for what is a successful cross-country runner.”
Not only did Taylor experience success in cross country, she was also twice an all-state basketball player and was on a relay team that placed at the state finals in track as well. She will be running track for Montabella this spring and is looking to bring home more awards for the Mustangs.
